Swirling black and white clay together is SOOOOOOOOOOO satisfying! Each Zebra mug starts as half white stoneware, half black stoneware, which are literally smashed together then thrown onto the potter’s wheel. The process of centering the clay, opening the pot, pulling up the walls, adding shape and, finally, trimming the cup and adding a handle results in a totally unique piece of striped pottery every time.
After all that, it is fired the first time to 1900 degrees F, after which glaze is applied. A colored glaze is added to the interior and rim, and the outside is coated in an ultra clear. The piece is then fired again, this time to nearly 2200 degrees F, and the finished mug is fully food, dishwasher and microwave safe. Signed and dated (year only) on the bottom by yours truly.
